Measuring pH Using Red Cabbage

The juice extracted from red cabbage can be used as a pH indicator.

  1. Prepare red cabbage juice using a blender and a little water.
  2. Separate the liquid from the pulp of the leaves (a coffee filter works well).
  3. Mix a few drops of the juice with various substances.  Here are a few suggestions (as seen in the photo below):
    • lemon juice
    • coffee
    • dishwashing liquid
    • orange juice
    • milk
    • vinegar
    • white wine
    • laundry detergent
  4. Mix and observe the colors.
