How will we set up the experiment? In order to get the energy to come out of the peanut and into the water to heat it up so that we can measure the rise in temperature, we are going to burn it. The heat from the flame of the burning peanut will warm up the water and we will be able to measure the temperature change. Why do we want to know that? Remember the definition of a calorie! It is the amount of energy necessary to raise the temperature of one gram of water one degree Celsius.
